Nicknamed “der hohle Zahn” (the hollow tooth), the Memorial Church is known for its damaged spire, bombed out in a 1943 raid. Characterized as the “heart of Berlin”, it was left ruined due to public outcry against tearing it down. At a minimum its presence poses questions for anyone unfamiliar with it. Why is it so damaged? How did that happen? Why has it not been repaired or rebuilt? All of which inevitably serve as a reminder of WWII.
